The German car manufacturer Opel was founded in 1862 by the locksmith Adam Opel with headquarters in Rüsselsheim. Adam Opel initially successfully built sewing machines and bicycles until his sons took over his successful legacy and switched to automobile manufacturing in 1899. It quickly became clear that Opel wanted to offer affordable vehicles for a large group of buyers. Assembly line production made the vehicles affordable for everyone. Due to the global economic crisis and increasing imports from America, sales fell. Opel responded by selling to the American company General Motors, which would prove to be a stroke of luck in the years that followed. Between 2008 and 2010, General Motors separated from Opel again. A takeover by Groupe PSA followed.
